Welcome to the Sun's lab
The Resilient Infrastructure Sensing and Evaluation (RISE) Laboratory, led by Dr. Sun in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE) at the University of Central Florida (UCF), is dedicated to advancing innovative solutions for smart cities and resilient infrastructure. Our research integrates sensing technologies, data analytics, automation and intelligent systems to address real-world challenges in the build environment.
We are actively seeking motivated undergraduate students to join the RISE Lab as research assistants and interns. We welcome applications from highly driven students with backgrounds in computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and related disciplines who are eager to apply their technical skills to real world challenges.
Students in the RISE Lab have to opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects such as drone-based remote sensing, smart sensing systems for structures, water networks, and solid-waste management, data analytics, machine learning and image processing. Through hands-on research, students will gain valuable experience developing innovative technologies that contribute to safer, smarter, and more sustainable communities.

Looking To Get Involved?
We are always looking for highly motivated students who are interested in contributing to research at the intersection of smart cities, resilient infrastructure, sensing technologies, and data analytics. Students with backgrounds in computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Current Research opportunities include topics such as:
-Drone-based remote sensing and data collection
-Sensing system development for smart structures, water networks, and waste-management infrastructure
-data analytics, machine learning, and image processing
Preferred qualifications include:
-Basic programming skills (e.g., Python and MATLAB, or similar languages)
-Familiarity with website development and related technologies
-Hands-on experience with laboratory, field, or engineering experiments
-Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative research team
-Initiative and strong work ethic
